Sewer SNAFU (Part 1)

Updated: May 16, 2023

We were told that as part of our initial “things to do” before we can submit our documents, we needed to have someone run a camera through our sewer line to see what condition that thing was in. I can’t remember the name of company we used to do the scope, but (at least in our minds) it was looking pretty good. Until that guy got to the part where the sewer line from our house meets the city’s line that goes to the main sewer line. This junction happens to be behind the house in the alley.

When he got to this part, he found what was probably the worst case scenario. A complete collapse of our sewer line. Yes, a complete collapse. Shit. Literally…shit. We have the video, but we’ll spare you guys. You’re welcome. Our sewage was creating a void in this area behind the house in the alley. That’s fantastic! Well…no. Not really. We did have the brief thought of “do we really need to do something about this? How serious is it?!” Once this brief bout of denial subsided, the thought quickly turned to “how much is this going to cost?”

More people to call…more people to come talk to us about what needs to be done. And this time, insurance! After a couple of discussions with some sewer repair companies, we went with Sewer Lines Only (https://sewerlinesonly.com/). They were all very helpful, but here’s about $11,000 we weren’t planning on. Especially this early in the process. That said, we were incredibly fortunate…incredibly lucky really that we had a sewer rider policy on the house and it covered nearly all of the cost. We were also lucky that the underground void where our sewer line meets the city’s line wasn’t much worse. Think sinkhole. Yeah…that thing where the ground seems to open up and swallow things whole? That thing. We had visions of our sewage causing this to happen to an unsuspecting neighbor some random day as they made their way through the alley on their way to work or happy hour. Uff. Well, I guess $11,000 isn’t much compared to fixing a sinkhole, someone’s car (the new Tesla a neighbor had recently purchased), and paying their medical bills from whatever injuries they incurred, especially considering insurance covered this thing. Pretty fortunate we found this when we did. As we have and will continue to say through all of this “it all happens for a reason.”

Diggin' a GD hole for our sewer. A long, deep, hole. Insert joke about your mom here.
